Dalian Jinzhou Bay International Airport is China's first offshore airport built on an artificial island, situated in the eastern waters of Jinzhou Bay, Dalian, Liaoning Province. The island covers approximately 20 km² and the airfield is designed to Category 4F.
Phase One comprises a 500,000 m² Terminal 1, a 50,000 m² ground transportation centre, a 173,000 m² car park, and two widely spaced parallel runways of 3,600 m (north) and 3,400 m (south), separated by 2,050 m. On completion the airport will handle 43 million passengers, 550,000 tonnes of cargo and 330,000 aircraft movements a year.
The terminal adopts a two-tier radial plan, linking a central main hall to six concourses and 77 contact stands, keeping the walking distance after security to just 320 m. The roof form is clean and fluid, reading as a spreading bird — the kunpeng of Chinese myth — binding together Dalian's twin themes of sea and flight, while the streamlined colonnade merges with the roof overhang into one continuous rhythm along the kerbside elevation. In the central hall, three branching columns modelled on sea coral carry a 60 m span skylight, minimising internal columns and opening the check-in hall to daylight and planting.
